Paul MacCready, inventor of the Gossamer Albatross, which made the first-ever human-powered flight across the English Channel in 1979, shows students in this spring's E-Team class on April 3 another of his inventions: the Ornithopter, a rubber-band propelled, butterfly-like flying machine made out of hollowed-out balsa wood and mylar. The tiny plane weighs just one gram. MacCready was named "Engineer of the Century" by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.
